The cooking
in Sao Bras is marked by the perfumes of the fresh herbs that are picked
in the surrounding fields. Oregano, Wild Sage and Thyme feature particularly
in the local cuisine and create memorable dishes such as a Thick Bread Soup,
Wild Rabbit in Wine, Kid, Chicken with Garlic (and Pir-Piri of course!)
and Eggs with Tomato and Chickpeas.
Eating
out is a really great experience here and is such good value, most guests
hardly ever turn on the cooker. We appreciate your views, good and bad which
you can add to the book in your cottage. This way we can alert others to
these facts and help every one to have a really enjoyable experience. You
will notice on the bill there is a cover charge included which is to pay
for the various titbits that appear at the beginning of the meal. This is
usually for around €2.00 per person. You will find that Sao Bras has an
embarrassment of restaurants and the majority of them can provide a good
meal for under £10.00 for two!
Here are
a selection taken from the comment books in the Cottages that constantly
get good press and maybe one or two that are our favourites too.
Churrasqueira
Sao Bras - Opposite Chicken Luis. Very bright and as a result modern looking
restaurant. Good cheap and basic food that will cost you less than a round
of drinks in the UK.
Churrasqueira
Luis dos Frangos (Chicken Luis) - About 200 metres from the square on the
Tavira road on the Right (there is a Motorway sign opposite). The restaurant
is set out with long tables. You just find a couple of chairs and sit down.
The staff have been there for years and know the ropes so you wont wait
long; neither will you get someone else's meal! Closed on Mondays (and all
September for some reason), their speciality is Chicken Piri-Piri. They
come from all over the Algarve for this. In addition, whole Pork Fillet
cooked in garlic, grilled Turkey breast and daily fresh Fish are well worth
a try. They also serve home made sweets including one called Molotov which
are served in huge portions.
Churrasqueira
Afonso - Just before you get to Chicken Luis on your right again, there
is another restaurant that has recently reopened after a full refurbishment.
Again, very reasonable prices, good food and the staff are friendly and
efficient. Gets quite busy and is closed on Tuesdays.
O Graciano
- This restaurant is about 3 kilometres further down the Tavira road, also
on the right hand side. This restaurant has settled down into a "must go"
on most peoples itinerary. Closed on Thursdays, the family team who operate
this restaurant are very obliging and they have now got the hang of our
language. House speciality is Filet Steak on a Stone. It comes to the table
on a piece of stone sizzling and due to this, you are fitted with the vital
bib. Every thing is well prepared and there are some nice home-made sweets
too.
O Ceu da
Palhagueira - Situated in the little village of Gorjoes, this restaurant
used to be our little secret. However, we felt it unfair to keep it to ourselves
any longer and here’s the necessary information to, what in our estimation,
is the best restaurant in the area. It is run by Maria Jose and Jean-Pierre
on the French "Fixed Price" basis; that is that you pay €23.00 per head
and get a six course meal including a welcome drink and liqueurs. The restaurant
can be found by taking the Loule road out of Sao Bras until you reach the
sign post to Gorjoes, Santa Barbara and also a small black and gold sign
to St. Luke’s Church. Turn left and carry on through the village of Gorjoes.
As you leave the village, you will see a row of Cyprus Trees on your right.
The turning is on your left and there is another sign to St. Luke’s. Go
up the road and park by the Church. The restaurant is behind the Church.
Closed on Mondays.
Fonte de
Pedra - Situated at the top of the Avenida, travel down the hill towards
the town until the hill flattens out and you will see a wide turning to
your left. Travel to the end of this road and the Restaurant is in front
of you. Last year the Fonte de Pedra changed hands and took a move up market.
The food is very good here and is all freshly prepared to order. English
is spoken well here and it is very popular at the weekends. Closed Tuesdays.
Rocha Da
Gralheira - Situated 2 kilometres down the Loule road, there is a blue sign
post to the right. Go up the hill and go left at the top. The Restaurant
is on your left. Ask us about the short cut home if you are brave enough!!.
Nice surroundings where you can eat with a super view back down into the
valley. Nice simply prepared Algarvian food. Also one or two more adventurous
dishes. Closed Wednesday.
A Horta
- Situated on the Tavira road, about 2 kms. from the square on your right.
Specialities including Turkey and Mushroom Cream Sauce and Peppered Steak.
Closed on Tuesdays, the staff here are very friendly and although the service
is relaxed, you will find the whole experience very pleasing in a spot less
environment.
The Avenida
- Near the top of the main high street on the left hand side. This moved
from across the road from it’s old site but it is still good food cooked
simply but well. House wine by the "Jarra" jug is worth it too. The locals
reckon this is the best Chicken Piri Piri too. We reckon this is the best
value in town too! Closed on Mondays.
The Savoy
- Under new management and has settled down to being a nice little restaurant
but quiet. The waiter is actually the owner and has been affected by an
illness so is not deliberately slow. Service is a little pedestrian nonetheless
but the food good. Go down to the square, turn right and The Savoy is 250
metres on your right next to a Church.
Xangai
Gourmet - Sao Bras gets another Chinese! Is there room for two? Well on
first encounters the answer seems to be yes. The food here is excellent
and being a lover of all things from the Orient, I should know. To find
this restaurant, go down to the square and travel from the square towards
the Church passing the Farmacia on your right. The restaurant is on your
right a few metres down the road. Tel: 289841277.
Ze Dias
- Go out of gate, turn right and proceed up the road until you reach the
Inn at Sao Bras on you right. Turn left again and travel for about three
kilometres, keeping to your left until you reach a T. Junction. Turn right
and almost immediately, Ze Dias is on your left.
Al Kimia
- This is a newly opened Restaurant on the Tavira road. From the square
take the Tavira road and travel past the Intermarche Supermarket on your
left. Travel another one kilometre and on your right you will see a cart
by a "T" junction. Turn right and park in the small car park. The Food here
is really excellent and a cut above most of the others in the area. Give
them your support and you wont regret it.
Bom Amigo
- This is the original Chinese Restaurant situated at the back of the block
housing Luis de Frangos. It still is actually the best Chinese we have tasted
in Portugal (believe me, I know!) But the menu is not as extensive as the
other restaurant, so why not go to both?
Mama Mia
- There is an Italian Pizza restaurant in Sao Bras at the top of the Avenida
on the left. Surprisingly good and great for a quick Pizza!
Loulé -
We felt we should mention a few good restaurants in Loulé.
The Avenida
- is very good for authentic Portuguese cuisine and has many English newspaper
write ups. Go down the main high street until you reach the fountain. Double
back towards Sao Bras and the Avenida is about 100 metres on your right.
The Tuna cooked in a crock is fantastic. Russel Harty used to be great Fan.
The Calypso
- is another fine restaurant that can be found by again travelling down
the high street, but turn right at the band Stand. Follow the road past
the Multi Story car park until you reach the roundabout. The Calypso is
on the right. Again, very good food and well worth the trek.
Olive Museum
- is also well worth the trip. The food is good and the surroundings are
interesting too. Ask us how to get there as it would take half a page to
describe.
Tavira
- This is another fine eating destination and is perfect for the Fish Lover.
There are dozens of Restaurants on the quay and around the river. Three
restaurants well worth visiting are:
The Patio
- particularly excellent for Cataplanas. To find this, make your way down
to the creek. When you reach the little petrol station, park your car and
walk across the left hand side pedestrian foot bridge. Carry straight ahead
and go down the little street until you reach a pseudo Irish bar on your
left. The restaurant is almost opposite up some stairs.
Restaurante
Marisqueira - is down on the Quay at the end of the row of Restaurants in
the old fisherman’s cabins.
Quatro
Aguas - (4 Aguas or Waters) is through Tavira and follow the creak across
the salt beds until you reach the Ferry Port to Tavira Island. The restaurant
is on your right. Again, very good for Fish and Shell-fish as fresh as it
will ever be.
Almancil
- This town is noted for an abundance of restaurants, including some of
the best in the Algarve; three with Michelin Stars! However, there are some
in particular which have caught our attention as "rising stars".
Fuzio’s
- is approximately 2 Kilometres along the Almancil to Quarteira road on
the right. Closed on Wednesdays, the menu is an eclectic mix of Italian,
Oriental and Classical themes. The menu, whilst not extensive, provides
a good choice including for the vegetarians amongst us. The pasta dishes
are cooked and presented particularly well and the desserts are to die for.
One of our favourites! To book, telephone 289 399019.
A Quinta
- is to be found on the Loulé to Almancil road half way down the hill on
the left hand side. Another balanced and well thought out menu featuring
seafood and oriental styled bistro dishes. Closed on Sundays, it is essential
to book as the word is out. Telephone 289 393357.
Pequeno
Mundo - is a well established restaurant with a deserved reputation but
is less pretentious than it’s Michelin starred peers. Closed on Sundays,
this is a reliable choice and has a menu well honed to cater for the widest
of tastes. To find it, follow the signs to the Karting Track. To book, telephone:
